We have cultivated our experiences as Literacy and Biliteracy Coaches, Reading Interventionists, and classroom teachers to develop a fluency program for all levels of readers in the primary grades. Welcome to Elevating Fluency
What We Do
Elevating Fluency is a highly motivating reading fluency program designed to enhance early literacy and provide critical prevention and early intervention strategies to boost literacy skills. Reading fluency is crucial for becoming a skilled reader, and the program includes tailored reading passages for each level of reader in the K-2+ classroom. It aligns seamlessly with the phonics scope and sequence provided by any structured literacy curriculum. Elevating Fluency will build vocabulary, enhance phonics skills through focused decoding and encoding practice, and improve fluency and comprehension. This reading fluency program is grounded in the science of reading and employs recommended strategies specifically designed for students facing reading difficulties, including those with dyslexia.
Differentiated Passages
By providing three differentiated reading passages for each phonics skill, students are given the stepping stones needed to enhance their early literacy skills and move rapidly toward grade-level reading proficiency and beyond. Additionally, it can be used as an extension for students at or above grade level.

Oral Language Development and Language Comprehension Opportunities Throughout Every Lesson
- Access and activate background knowledge through discussion.
- Preview vocabulary and warm-up words, and discuss word meaning, including multiple meanings to support comprehension and language growth.
- Visual supports are intentionally embedded in an illustration to promote vocabulary and warm-up word comprehension.
- Have students use new vocabulary and warm-up words orally in sentences.
- Ask comprehension questions that require full sentence answers.
- Engage students in partner talk or small-group discussion about the text.
- Model and practice oral summarizing of key ideas.
- Allow students to make text-to-self and text-to-world connections through conversation.
- Offer sentence stems and frames as needed to support students in responding with complete sentences and clear academic language.
Student Engagement
Students will read interesting passages that include both fiction and nonfiction as part of their early literacy development. They have a graph on their paper for several reasons. Self-tracking increases motivation and engagement, which leads to greater reading gains. The graph provides these young readers with immediate feedback on their progress—an important aspect of any reading fluency program. This visual tool is also key in connecting with parents, helping students communicate their reading success.
Parent Engagement
Parent involvement in their child’s early literacy development is a vital component of achieving literacy proficiency, particularly for students facing reading difficulties. Engaging in additional practice at home with concepts currently being taught, as well as revisiting previous concepts, benefits all children. Elevating Fluency offers a parent letter (available in English and Spanish) that explains the program and encourages family support. By having their children read the target words and passages aloud, parents can help strengthen reading fluency and reinforce concepts taught. Students often feel a sense of pride in their accomplishments, eagerly showcasing their reading fluency to their parents. This approach serves as an enjoyable and effective method to motivate striving readers to practice their skills at home in a meaningful way.
